Oval will host the final of the ICC Intercontinental Shield between the UAE and Namibia as its first game

Dubai The International Cricket Council (ICC) Global Cricket Academy’s Oval cricket ground will become another first class match venue in the UAE on December 2.

The Global Cricket Academy has created two Oval grounds at Dubai Sports City for the staging of the academy’s matches, visiting teams and local tournaments. The Oval 1 will become a first class match venue when it will stage the final of the ICC Intercontinental Shield final between UAE and Namibia from December 2 to 5.

“The Shield final will be held along with the ICC Intercontinental Cup final between Afghanistan and Scotland at the Dubai Sports City International cricket stadium,” Mazhar Khan, Administrator of the Emirates Cricket Board, said to Gulf News.

“The Shield final is a four-day event while the Intercontinental Cup is a five-day event. It will be a great experience for the UAE team to play in a new ground. The Oval is a good ground with an excellent pavilion equipped with all facilities,” added Khan.

Clay from Perth

Nearly 200 tonnes of clay from Perth in Western Australia and another 200 tonnes from Brisbane, which is used at the Gabba cricket ground, were laid at the Global Academy’s oval grounds and practice area.

When Oval 1 will host the Shield final it will become the second venue in UAE to host first class matches.

This is apart from the three international venues like Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Abu Dhabi Shaikh Zayed Stadium and Dubai Sports City international stadium.

Last year, Al Dhaid cricket village ground became another first class match venue by hosting the Asian Cricket Council trophy matches.

UAE made it to the final of the Intercontinental Shield final beating Bermuda by nine wickets at the National Stadium in Bermuda in July this year. The chief destroyer of Bermuda was UAE’s left-arm spinner Ahmad Raza who returned with match figures of 6 for 60.

The Afghan team, which trains at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, topped the table of the Intercontinental Cup group stage to qualify for the final. They meet Scotland who was the 2004 winner of the event.
