| Background |
Riyadh Municipality plans to build King Abdullah International Gardens located in the South East of Riyadh. The project will cover an area of 1.6 million sq. m.and will be divided to 2 crescents and 7 sections: Scientific Gardens, Water Gardens, Physic Gardens, Aviary Gardens, Maze Gardens, Gardens of Sound and Light and the Grotto . It will also include retail areas, a mosque and restaurants. The project will be developed in 3 phases. Phase 1-a includes preliminary works and earthworks. Phase 1-b includes the Scientific Gardens, the Wadi Garden, parking and camp areas. Phase 2 includes the first crescent, the management center and camp areas. Phase 3 includes the second crescent, Aviary Gardens and Water Gardens. The JV of Barton Willmore and Buro Happold is the master planner, Natural History Museum is the design consultant and Omrania and AssociatesOmrania and Associates is the PMC. |

In Q2 2012, the main construction contract (including phases 1-b, 2 and 3) is expected to be awarded (delayed for the third time from Q4 2010) and construction is expected to start. In Q3 2013, the project is expected to be completed. |

In January 2012, phase 1-a was completed. On 3 July 2010, the bids for the main construction contract (including phases 1-b, 2 and 3) were submitted (delayed from 16 May 2010). In March 2010, the ITB for the main construction contract was issued (delayed from January 2010). In December 2009, the pre-qualified list of contractors was issued. In Q4 2009, the design was completed. In May 2008, the construction of phase 1-a started. In March 2008, the construction contract (worth USD 13 million) of phase 1-a was awarded to Areif Contracting Company. In September 2007, the groundbreaking ceremony took place. |
