| Background |
Sohar Aluminium Company plans to develop an Aluminum Smelter in Sohar. The smelter project will include a 1000 MW captive power plant and associated port facilities. The 360,000 t/y aluminum smelter plant will be Oman's first smelter and is expected to expand capacity at a later stage. Alumina feedstock will be imported from Australia, while petroleum coke will be brought from India and the Middle East. The plant will use the AP 35 technology. |

In February 2009, full production was achieved (originally expected in December 2008). In June 2008, commissioning started and the first hot metal rod was produced. In March 2008, 85 percent of the smelter construction was completed. The anode baking furnace, the solios fume treatment center and Innovatherm's firing system were successfully started. In February 2008, Masco (a JV between Austin Engineering of Australia and Specialist Technical Services (STS) of Oman) completed the delivery of 360 busbars. In July 2005, BechtelBechtel was awarded the EPCM contract. In November 2004, the ITB for the EPCM contract was issued. |

Construction of a single AP35 pot line aluminium smelter together with associated carbon and casting facilities and other related facilities. |
| Financing Source |
In December 2005, agreements were signed with international and regional banks and financiers to provide USD1,460 million non recourse term loan facilities with the balance funded by equity from shareholders. The loan facility will include USD240 million Islamic finance. CitigroupCitigroup is the financial adviser. |
