Background Abu Dhabi Future Energy CompanyAbu Dhabi Future Energy CompanyLoading... (Masdar) plans to construct a 100 MW Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) Plant in Madinat Zayed, western Abu Dhabi.

The CSP plant will supply the national electricity grid. It will use the parabolic trough technology, which reflects the direct solar radiation onto a receiver.

The plant will be developed under a 25 year Build, Own, Operate (BOO) basis.

The capacity of the plant is planned to be increased to 2,000 MW in the future.

The plant will be constructed on an area of 2.5 sq.km. It will later be extended to 6.5 sq.km.

On 15 November 2010, Masdar awarded Foster WheelerFoster WheelerLoading... a contract to design, supply a solar steam generator system and perform site advisory services.

In Q3 2010, the construction of the plant started.

In June 2010, the BOO contract was awarded and signed with the JV of Abengoa Solar and TotalTotalLoading.... The BOO contract award was initially expected to be awarded in March 2010.

In H1 2009, the project was delayed to the end of September 2009 due to the relocation of the project. The contract award was previously expected in May 2009 and construction was expected to begin in Q2 2009.

On 19 October 2008, bidders submitted their proposals for the BOO contract. The JV of Abengoa Solar and TotalTotalLoading... submitted the lowest bid.

In May 2008, the list of prequalified bidders for the BOO contract was released.

In December 2007, Masdar and Cosmo Oil Company signed a contract with the Tokyo Institute of Technology to research and develop solar tower "beam down" technology. Under the agreement, Masdar and Cosmo will work together in the beam-down research program for technology transfer and acquisition of intellectual property. A 100 kW beam-down pilot plant will be built in Abu Dhabi by the end of 2008.

In January 2007, Masdar signed a contract with Fichtner Consulting EngineersFichtner Consulting EngineersLoading... to provide technical advice and with the German Aerospace Agency, or DLR, to evaluate the plans for the construction of a commercial-scale solar-thermal power plant in Abu Dhabi.
