Background Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer)Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer)Loading... plans to construct a grassroots refinery alongside its existing refinery in Ruwais.

The expansion project will increase the Ruwais refining capacity by 400,000 bpd.

The refinery will produce unleaded gasoline, naphtha, aviation turbine fuel, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), kerosene, gas-oil, bunker fuel and other hydrocarbon derivatives. The project will also include a cracker unit with a capacity of 127,100 bpd.

The project will be developed in 8 packages including: crude distillation and sulfur recovery facilities, a residue fluidized catalytic cracker, offsites and utilities, storage tanks, infrastructure work, marine works, and two separate packages for the site preparation works for the northern and southern areas.

Shaw Group is the refining technology provider.

CBI Lummus is the cracking and olefins conversion technology provider.

UOP is the hydro-processing technology provider.

In November 2009, five packages were awarded. The marine and the fluid cracking unit packages were awarded to GS Engineering and Construction, the crude distillation units package was awarded to SK Engineering and Construction, the tank farm package was awarded to Daewoo Engineering and Construction and the offsites and utilities package was awarded to Samsung Engineering and Construction.

In August 2009, the FEED study was completed.

On 7 June 2009, dredging works started.

In May 2009, the EPC contract for the dredging package was awarded to Dredging International.

In September 2008, the technology and engineering services contract was awarded to UOP (subsidiary of Honeywell Company).

In August 2008, the proprietary technology contract was awarded to Shaw Group.
