| Background |
Emirates AluminumEmirates Aluminum plans to construct a Power Island project as the power component of Emirates Aluminium's smelter project in Taweelah, Abu Dhabi. The purpose of thr project is to provide power to the 1.4 million t/y smelter. The smelter is being developed in two phases: the first phase with around 700,000 t/y capacity will cost USD 5 billion and is expected to be operational in 2010, while the second phase will cost approximately USD 3 billion. The power plant will have a capacity of 2,000 MW. The power capacity will be increased to 3,600 MW in the second phase of the project. The gas feedstock for the power plant and smelter will be secured by EMALEMAL . Abu Dhabi Ports CompanyAbu Dhabi Ports Company (ADPC) constructed a dock in Taweelah specifically for the EMALEMAL complex. |

In March 2011, the project was completed. |
| Previous Events |
In January 2011, the commissioning of the plant was in progress. In October 2009, commissioning started on the first two units of the plant. The units will be gradually put in service at a rate of one per month until the completion of all units. In August 2009, EMALEMAL and GASCOGASCO opened a natural gas pipeline to allow onsite power production at the smelter. The gas pipeline will provide the power plant with an uninterrupted supply of natural gas. In May 2009, Target Engineering ConstructionTarget Engineering Construction won a USD 19.3 million contract from EMALEMAL for the above ground electrical and instrumentation works for the power plant. In November 2008, EMALEMAL received the first delivery of power equipment from GE at the ADPC dock. Equipment delivery is expected to end in July 2009. In July 2008, the USD 500 million supply and installation contract for the power equipment (frame 9FA gas turbines, C7 steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators and condensers) was awarded to General Electric International Operations CompanyGeneral Electric International Operations Company . In May 2008, EMALEMAL signed a 30-year gas supply deal with ADNOCADNOC . In April 2008, the USD 200 million supply and installation contract for the gas treatment centers (GTC) was awarded to AlstomAlstom . In November 2007, construction work started. In May 2007, the EPCM contract was awarded to SLWP, a joint venture between SNC-LavalinSNC-Lavalin & WorleyParsonsWorleyParsons . |
| Scope of Work |
Construction of a 2,000 MW gas fired combined cycle power plant, with supplemental duct firing and dual fuel operations, with gas turbines of model 9FA, supplied by GE. Supply and installation of six combustion turbine generators, four bypass stacks for simple cycle operations, four heat recovery steam generators (HRSG) with exhaust stacks, two C steam turbine generators (C7), and two sea water cooling surface condensers. |
