| Background |
The Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the GulfCooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf , also known as Gulf Cooperation CouncilGulf Cooperation Council , plans to build a railway network project in the GCC. The purpose of the project is to link the 6 GCC states together running from Kuwait to Oman. The railway will be around 2,200 Km long covering the coast of the Gulf and extending from Oman to Kuwait, passing through the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia. The railway will be linked to the planned Middle East rail network where the full network will have 16 lanes with an approximate length of 19,000 Km. There are two proposed routes for the project. The first proposed route will be running Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain over Qatar, crossing the relevant stretches of water by bridge and continuing to UAE and Oman. The second will stretch from Kuwait to Saudi Arabia before passing through UAE and ending in Oman. GCC states have been independently developing their sections of the rail line. The consortium of Systra, Khatib and Alami, and Canrail is the feasibility study consultant and the World BankWorld Bank will advise on the tendering process. |
