| Background |
Libyan Norwegian Fertiliser Company plans to revamp the fertilizers plant at Marsa Al Brega. The plant currently produces 150,000 t/y of ammonia and 900,000 t/y of urea. The project will be executed in 2 phases: the first phase includes upgrading the existing facilities while the second phase includes studying the possibility of building a new plant (depending on the gas availability). NOCNOC will supply natural gas and services. |

In Q2 2011, the project was put on hold due to the political situation. On 9 February 2009, Yara InternationalYara International , National Oil Corporation of Libya (NOCNOC ) and Libyan Investment Authority (LIA) signed the final agreements for the JV company. The JV company will be known as Libyan Norwegian Fertiliser Company (Lifeco). In July 2008, the agreement in order to set up the JV was finalized between Yara InternationalYara International , National Oil Corporation of Libya (NOCNOC ) and the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA). On 17 February 2008, the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA), NOCNOC and Yara InternationalYara International (Norway) signed a JV framework agreement in order to establish a new JV company to own, operate, upgrade and develop the urea and ammonia plants at Marsa Al Brega. In April 2007, NOCNOC signed Heads of Agreement with Yara InternationalYara International with the intention to establish a joint venture (JV) for the production and marketing of mineral fertilizer. The JV will be owned equally by the partners and it will be involved in developing the existing fertilizer complex at Marsa Al Brega. |
