| Background |
Emirates Aluminium (EMAL)Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) plans to develop phase 2 of the aluminum smelter complex in Khalifa Port and Industrial Zone, UAE. Phase one aims at producing 700,000 t/y of aluminum, while phase two aims at increasing the capacity to 1.4 million t/y of aluminum. DubalDubal will supply its proprietary DX reduction technology for the plant. The DX technology cell reduces the amount of energy needed for the production of aluminum. JV of SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin and WorleyParsonsWorleyParsons is the feasibility study consultant. SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin is the FEED study consultant and the EPCM. |

In February 2012, construction of the smelter was ongoing. In October 2011, construction started. On 4 October 2011, the ground breaking ceremony took place. In September 2011, the FEED study was completed. In August 2011, EMALEMAL awarded USD 700 million worth of contracts. The EPCM contract was awarded to SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin . This contract extends EMALEMAL ’s relationship with SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin which provided the same support and services for phase 1 of the smelter’s development. EMALEMAL also awarded several supply contracts: JV of Sojitz and Fuji to supply transformers and rectifiers, JV of Sojitz and Hyundai to supply a 400 KV intertie transformer, ABBABB to supply 220 KV GIS, AlstomAlstom to supply gas and fume treatment centres, Outotec to supply green carbon plant, butts crushing, anode rodding shop and hot bath removal and Rio Tinto Alcan to supply anode baking furnace technology. On 24 July 2011, the company announced that the board of directors approved the investment in the project due to the successful completion of phase 1. In June 2010, the FEED study started. In April 2010, the FEED contract was awarded to SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin . In May 2009, the feasibility study was approved. In March 2009, the feasibility study was completed. In October 2008, EMALEMAL launched a preliminary feasibility study for phase 2. SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin and WorleyParsonsWorleyParsons carried out the feasibility study. In 2007, the feasibility study contract was awarded to the JV of SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin and WorleyParsonsWorleyParsons . |

Royal bank of Scotland (RBS)Royal bank of Scotland (RBS) is the financial adviser. In Q1 2012, negotiations with export credit agencies (ECAs) are expected to be finalized. In November 2011, EMALEMAL started discussions with commercial banks to initiate the funding for the project. In March 2011, EMALEMAL laucnhed the financing process for the project. The Royal bank of Scotland (RBS)Royal bank of Scotland (RBS) approached export credit agencies (ECAs) with information packages regarding the financing deal. These ECAs include Coface and Hermes. In June 2010, Royal bank of Scotland (RBS)Royal bank of Scotland (RBS) was selected as the financial adviser. In the end of February 2010, six banks (Societe GeneraleSociete Generale , BNP Paribas,BNP Paribas, Deutsche BankDeutsche Bank , Credit Agricole, Royal bank of Scotland (RBS)Royal bank of Scotland (RBS) , CitigroupCitigroup ) submitted proposals for the role of financial adviser. In early February 2010, EMALEMAL invited banks to submit their proposals in order to choose a financial adviser for the project. |
