Background The Azzawiya Refining CompanyAzzawiya Refining CompanyLoading... (ARCARCLoading...) plans to upgrade its Azzawiya refinery, 40 km west of Tripoli, Libya.

The project aims at upgrading and restoring the 120,000 bpd refinery.

The project will be developed in phases. Phase 1 will include upgrading the distribution control system. Phase 2 will include cracking and transforming of heavy fuel oil into highly economical white products. Phase 3 will include expanding the harbor to permit docking tankers to float buoys linked to the sea-port.

Foster WheelerFoster WheelerLoading... is the PMC and the FEED study consultant, feasibility study consultant, and the technical consultant.

Latest Events In January 2012, the project was under planning.

In April 2012, the tendering and bidding process for the EPC contract is expected to be launched. The expected schedule was not revealed.
Previous Events In Q4 2011, the project was resumed. The FEED study contract, feasibility study contract, and the technical consultancy contract were awarded to Foster WheelerFoster WheelerLoading.... The PMC contract with Foster WheelerFoster WheelerLoading... was renewed.

In November 2010, the project was still on hold.

In Q1 2009, NOC decided to look for a joint venture to own the project. The project was then put on hold.

In April 2006, ITB for the EPC contract was issued.

In May 2005, the project was re-launched.

In May 2003, the project was put on hold.
Scope of Work The project includes:

- upgrading and restoration of existing facilities at the refinery
- installation of a new continuous catalytic reformer (CCR) unit
- a naphtha and gas oil hydro treater
- an isomerisation unit
