Background The Qatar Bahrain Causeway FoundationQatar Bahrain Causeway FoundationLoading... (QBCF) plans to develop a multi-lane causeway to link Bahrain and Qatar.

One side of the causeway will be located near the village of Askar on Bahrain's eastern coast and the other side will be located at Ras Ashiraj on Qatar's western shore.

The causeway which is known as the "Friendship Causeway" is expected to be one of the longest over water traffic links.

The causeway will be 40 km long and will have a two-lane dual carriageway, including 18 km of embankments and a further 22 km of viaducts and bridges over the high seas, including two 400 m cable bridges over shipping channels.

The bridge is expected to have a train component enabling the crossing of trains as part of the scheme.

COWI is the design consultant.

Latest Events In January 2012, the project was still on hold and the contractors still haven't received any official notice to begin work on the project.

In Q2 2012, work is expected to resume.

In 2018, the project is expected to be completed (delayed for the third time from Q2 2013).
Previous Events As of October 2011, contractors haven't received any official notice to begin work on the project.

In April 2011, negotiations regarding the cost of the project were finalized and announced at an estimated USD 5 billion.

In January 2011, the Qatar and Bahrain Causeway Foundation was still in negotiations with the consortium led by Vinci Construction Grand Projects regarding the cost.

In June 2010, the project was put on hold.

In November 2009, the consortium led by Vinci Construction Grands Projects started the negotiations with the management of the Qatar Bahrain causeway regarding the final design and cost.

In March 2009, the project went into re-design to incorporate a train track component. This modification to the project is expected to increase its cost by an additional USD 1 billion.

In November 2008, the negotiations started with the jv of KBRKBRLoading... and Halcrow International PartnershipHalcrow International PartnershipLoading... regarding the PMC contract.

In August 2008, the PMC contract was re-tendered.

In July 2008, the survey works (including marine, geological, mining and exploration and soil studies) started.

On 6 May 2008, the QBC consortium led by Vinci Construction Grands Projects signed the DB contract. The consortium includes Vinci, Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment CompanyQatari Diar Real Estate Investment CompanyLoading..., Hochtief, Consolidated Contractors International CompanyConsolidated Contractors International CompanyLoading... (CCC), and Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO). The design consultancy contract was awarded to COWI.

In April 2007, QDVC, a joint venture between Qatari Diar and Vinci Construction, was officially registered.

In 2002, the preliminary engineering and environmental study was completed.

In 2001, the preliminary engineering and environmental study contract was awarded to COWI.
Scope of Work Construction of a 40 km two lane dual carriageway motorway including:

- 5 dams with a combined length of 17,000 m
- 4 pairs of parallel rail and road viaducts (combined length: 22,900 m)
- Bridges
- 2 navigation channels
- A channel to exchange hydraulic
- Tolls, buildings and facilities
- interchanges


The causeway will be built over 18 km of embankments (where the sea is shallow) and 22 km of viaducts and bridges (over deep water), including two 400 m cable-stayed bridges over shipping channels.
Financing Source In October 2011, Qatar approved a USD 350 million loan for the project.
