| Background |
The Qatar Bahrain Causeway FoundationQatar Bahrain Causeway Foundation (QBCF) plans to develop a multi-lane causeway to link Bahrain and Qatar. One side of the causeway will be located near the village of Askar on Bahrain's eastern coast and the other side will be located at Ras Ashiraj on Qatar's western shore. The causeway which is known as the "Friendship Causeway" is expected to be one of the longest over water traffic links. The causeway will be 40 km long and will have a two-lane dual carriageway, including 18 km of embankments and a further 22 km of viaducts and bridges over the high seas, including two 400 m cable bridges over shipping channels. The bridge is expected to have a train component enabling the crossing of trains as part of the scheme. COWI is the design consultant. The JV of Halcrow International PartnershipHalcrow International Partnership and KBRKBR is the PMC. |

As of October 2011, contractors haven't received any official notice to begin work on the project. In April 2011, negotiations regarding the cost of the project were finalized and announced at an estimated USD 5 billion. In January 2011, the Qatar and Bahrain Causeway Foundation was still in negotiations with the consortium led by Vinci Construction Grand Projects regarding the cost. In June 2010, the project was put on hold. In November 2009, the consortium led by Vinci Construction Grands Projects started the negotiations with the management of the Qatar Bahrain causeway regarding the final design and cost. In March 2009, the project went into re-design to incorporate a train track component. This modification to the project is expected to increase its cost by an additional USD 1 billion. In November 2008, the negotiations started with the jv of KBRKBR and Halcrow International PartnershipHalcrow International Partnership regarding the PMC contract. In August 2008, the PMC contract was re-tendered. In July 2008, the survey works (including marine, geological, mining and exploration and soil studies) started. On 6 May 2008, the QBC consortium led by Vinci Construction Grands Projects signed the DB contract. The consortium includes Vinci, Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment CompanyQatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company , Hochtief, Consolidated Contractors International CompanyConsolidated Contractors International Company (CCC), and Middle East Dredging Company (MEDCO). The design consultancy contract was awarded to COWI. In May 2008, the consortium submitted the preliminary budget to the Qatar Bahrain Causeway FoundationQatar Bahrain Causeway Foundation . In April 2008, officials announced the project cost might increase by 40 percent due to inflation in construction costs and building materials costs. In April 2008, bidders submitted their proposals for the program management services contract. In March 2008, the consortium completed the preparation of the detailed design, reviewed the preliminary designs and the viability of the project. In September 2007, the Qatar Bahrain Causeway FoundationQatar Bahrain Causeway Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the consortium led by Vinci Construction Grands Projets and Qatari Diar Real Estate Investment CompanyQatari Diar Real Estate Investment Company .
