| Background |
The Ministry of Transport and CommunicationMinistry of Transport and Communication in Oman plans to construct a 1,370 km long railway from Sohar to Salalah, Oman. The purpose of the project is to link the governorates of Muscat and Buraimi. It will pass through Sohar, Muscat, Duqm and Salalah. It will include 25 stations and will be used for passenger and freight transport. The railway will be executed in 3 phases. Phase 1 extends from Sohar to Muscat (230 km), phase 2 extends from Muscat to Duqm (560 km) and phase 3 extends from Duqm to Salalah (580 km). The project will eventually be part of the 2,200 km GCC rail network linking Iran and the Arabian peninsula. The consortium of SystraSystra and National Engineering OfficeNational Engineering Office is the feasibility study consultant. The World BankWorld Bank will be advising on the tendering process. |

On 5 December 2011, the prequalified companies submitted their bids for the design and supervision contract (delayed from 7 November 2011). In September 2011, the Supreme Committee for Town Planning handed over the project to the Ministry of Transport and Communications. On 7 September 2011, the ITB for the design and supervision contract was issued. In July 2011, the prequalification process for the PMC contract was delayed with no expected date to resume. Companies were previously expected to be shortlisted for the PMC contract in June 2011. In November 2010, the pre-qualification offers for the PMC and design and supervision consultancy contracts were under evaluation. On 14 June 2010, the prequalification documents for the PMC contract were submitted. On 31 May 2010, the prequalification documents for the design and supervision contract were submitted. On 13 April 2010, the RFQ for the PMC and design and supervision contracts was issued. In Q4 2009, the feasibility study was completed. In Q1 2009, the feasibility study contract was awarded to the consortium of SystraSystra and National Engineering OfficeNational Engineering Office . In 2008, the project was announced. |
