| Background |
The Roads and Transport AuthorityRoads and Transport Authority (RTARTA ) plans to develop Dubai Metro in Dubai, UAE. The purpose of the project is to solve its severe traffic congestion problems in Dubai. The metro network will comprise 4 lines. The Red Line is 45 Km long and stretches from Rashidiya to the Jebel Ali border. The Green Line is 22.5 Km long and extends from Dubai Airport Free Zone to Dubai Healthcare City (DHCC). The Purple Line is 49 Km long and links Dubai International Airport with Jebel Ali Airport. The Blue Line is 50 Km long and stretches from Dubai International Airport to Al Maktoum International Airport passing through Emirates Road. RTARTA plans to extend the Red and Green lines. Llewelyn Davies is the lead architect for the Red and the Green lines. Parsons BrinckerhoffParsons Brinckerhoff is the preliminary design and master plan consultant. |

In April 2012, the Purple Line, the Red Line Extension, the Green line Extension and the Blue Line were awaiting the finalization of the master plan. In May 2012, the master plan is expected to be completed (delayed for the second time from March 2012). In 2013, the Red Line Extension was initially expected to be completed. In Q4 2013, the Purple Line was initially expected to be completed. In 2014, the Blue Line was initially expected to be completed. |
| Previous Events |
In July 2011, the construction of the Green Line was completed. In June 2010, the Blue Line was awaiting the finalization of the master plan. In February 2010, the design and study of the Purple Line and the extension of the Red Line were awaiting the finalization of the masterplan. On 9 September 2009, the construction of the Red Line and 10 stations was completed. In August 2009, the project's value increased by USD 3.4 billion due to the extension of the metro line by 4.5 Km. In February 2009, the RTARTA signed a contract with the British Office of Rail Regulation to provide advice on the certification and regulation of Dubai Metro's rail safety standards. In October 2008 the RTARTA announced that the budget for the Red and Green lines increased by 30% (that is around USD 1.27 billion) since the launching of the project in 2006 due to the increase in the costs of the building material. In September 2008, a successful trial operation of the metro was conducted between Jebel Ali station and Ibn Battouta station (11 Km). In 2006, the project was launched. |
