| Background |
The Iraqi Ministry of OilIraqi Ministry of Oil plans to rehabilitate and expand the country's oil and gas pipeline network. The project will be conducted in three phases. Phase one compromises a 1.75 million bpd pipeline from Basra in the South of Iraq to Haditha, in the Western Anbar governorate. At that point the pipeline will then split into two lines; one going Westwards to the Syrian border and the other joining the Northern export pipeline from Kirkuk to Ceyhan in Turkey. Phase two includes compromises a 1.5 million bpd of heavy crude oil pipeline from Basra to north Baghdad and then transferred to the Syrian port of Tartus for export into the Mediterranean. Phase three compromises the construction of oil product pipelines from Iraq’s current and four planned refineries (Karbala, Kirkuk, Nassiriyah, Maysan) to depots across the country. The sizes of the pipelines will be determined upon completion of engineering however more than 7,000 km of pipeline is needed for the project. Future plans for pipeline rehabilitation and the time line for the projects will be determined depending on the success of phase one and the political situation in the region. |
