| Background |
The Abu Dhabi Airports CompanyAbu Dhabi Airports Company (ADACADAC ) plans to build the Midfield Terminal Complex in Abu Dhabi, UAE. The purpose of the project is to add 20 million people to the airport's passenger handling capacity and will allow for ultimate expansion to over 50 million passengers and more than 2 million tons of cargo each year. The project will include the construction of a 220,000 sq.m. terminal between the existing runway and a new second runway to be built 2 km to the north. The terminal will initially have over 30 gates, and will expand to over 80 gates to cope with anticipated growth. The project is part of Abu Dhabi's AirportAbu Dhabi's Airport expansion plan to increase passenger traffic from the current 7 million to above 40 million per year and cargo capacity to 2.5 million t/y. Skidmore Owings and Merrill (SOM) is the master plan consultant, Kohn Pederson Fox Associates is the design consultant and Parsons InternationalParsons International is the PMC. |

On 6 May 2012, ADACADAC selected the consortium of Consolidated Contractors Company, TAVTAV and Arabtec ConstructionArabtec Construction for the main construction contract. In May 2012, the bids for the CMS contract were under evaluation. In June 2012, the main construction contract is expected to be signed between ADACADAC and the consortium of Consolidated Contractors Company, TAVTAV and Arabtec ConstructionArabtec Construction . In Q3 2012, the CMS contract is expected to be awarded (delayed from March 2011) , the RFQ for the airside civil works contract is expected to be issued and construction of the midfield terminal complex is expected to start. In H1 2017, the project is expected to be completed. |

On 6 March 2012, the four shortlisted consortia submitted their final bids for the main construction contract. In February 2012, four consortiums were shortlisted for the main construction contract: Consortium of Arabian Construction Company, Samsung Corporation and Six Construct, Consortium of Bechtel, Enka and Al Jaber Group, Consortium of Consolidated Contractors Company, TAVTAV and Arabtec ConstructionArabtec Construction and Consortium of Hyundai Engineering and Construction, Kumho Engineering and Construction, China State Construction Engineering Corporation and Al Shafar General Contracting Company. In January 2012, the Abu Dhabi Government approved the Midfield Terminal project. On 13 November 2011, the bids for the main construction contract were submitted (delayed from 11 September 2011). In October 2011, the bids for the CMS contract were under evaluation. In June 2011, three companies backed out from their prequalified consortiums for the main construction contract: Taisei, Bouygues and Multiplex left their consortiums which were led by Al Naboodah, Arabian Construction Company and National Projects and Construction respectively. On 31 May 2011, SCADIASCADIA was dissolved and the planning and development of the Abu Dhabi International Airport Expansion was transferred to Abu Dhabi Airports CompanyAbu Dhabi Airports Company (ADACADAC ). In February 2011, the ITB for the main construction contract was issued. In January 2011, the prequalification process for the construction contract was completed. In December 2010, the excavation works were completed. In July 2010, the bids for the Construction Management Services (CMS) contract were under evaluation. In April 2010, the bids for the Construction Management Services (CMS) contract were submitted. The awarded company will work with the PMC and will manage the work of other sub-contractors and consultants. On 1 February 2010, bidders submitted their prequalification applications for the main construction contract. In December 2009, the RFQ for the main construction contract was issued. In Q3 2009, the BOT contract was canceled. The contract was expected to be re-tendered as a construction contract rather than a BOT contract. In May 2009, the prequalified contractors were selected. In February 2009, the piling and excavation works contract was awarded to National Services and Contracting Company (NSCC)National Services and Contracting Company (NSCC) . In January 2009, three companies were shortlisted for the BOT contract. The companies are Aeroports de Paris (ADP), Hochtief and TAVTAV . In November 2008, the ITB for the excavation construction contract was issued. The contract also covers finishing of the piling works. In June 2008, the design was completed. In Q4 2007, the ITB for the BOT pre-qualification was issued. In June 2006, the design contract was awarded to Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates. In October 2005, the ITB was issued for the design contract. In March 2005, the master plan was completed. |
