| Background |
NakheelNakheel plans to build a 5.45 km monorail network in Jumeirah Palm Island that will run between the Gateway Station at the trunk of The Palm Jumeirah and the Atlantis Station on the crescent. The monorail is a Hitachi-based system with a 5.45 km fully elevated, double tracked system with 4 stations that will initially carry up to 2,400 passengers per hour per direction in four separate trains, each made up of three cars. At full capacity, the monorail will handle a maximum of 6,000 people in nine vehicles. The monorail project will be fully automatic and driver less. The system will eventually be linked to the Dubai Metro. Parsons BrinckerhoffParsons Brinckerhoff Middle East is the project manager, Mott MacDonaldMott MacDonald is the supervising consultant, and the consortium led by Marubeni CorporationMarubeni Corporation is the design consultant. |

In April 2009, the commissioning was completed and the monorail was opened to the public. In February 2009, a contract was signed with SMRT Engineering to operate the monorail. In October 2008, the testing of the trains started and will continue till they are open to the public. In July 2008. construction was completed. In August 2007, SMRT Engineering (SMRTE) was appointed as the operator. SMRTE will define the operational procedures and will recruit and train staff for the operation of The Palm Monorail. In January 2007, Osaka Monorail Company signed a contract to operate and maintain the framework. In September 2005, the construction contract was awarded to the consortium of Hitachi Corporation, Marubeni CorporationMarubeni Corporation , Mitsui and Company, and Obayashi Corporation. Mechanical, electrical systems and trains will be manufactured by Hitachi Corporation. |
