Background The Dubai Road and Transport AuthorityDubai Road and Transport AuthorityLoading... (RTA) plans to build a tram system in Al Sufouh area to improve traffic flow and road services between Umm Suqeim and Jumeirah Lakes.

The project will be implemented in 2 phases. The first phase will link Al Sufouh area with Dubai Marina area by replacing the existing bridge with a new one to link Jumeirah Beach Residence and Dubai Marina. Phase 1 will include construction of a 10 km tram line with 13 stations. The 4 km second phase will build a spur line to link Jumeirah Beach road with the Mall of the Emirates.

Upon completion, the 14 km tram network will accommodate up to 5,200 passengers per hour in each direction.

Systra of France is the project consultant.
Current Status In June 2008, the DB contract was signed and the design aspect of the DB contract has started.

In April 2008, the DB contract for phase 1 was awarded to the ABS Consortium - consisting of AlstomAlstomLoading..., Besix, and Serco Group. The awarded consortium has the option to include phase 2 in the contract during a later stage.

In March 2008, bidders submitted their revised bid prices after RTARTALoading...'s decision to move the scheme's depot underground.

On 7 September 2007, the ITB for the DB contract was issued.
Scope of Work Phase 1:
- Construction of a 10 km tram line, 13 stations, and an underground depot.
- Supply and installation of 11 trains.

Phase 2:
- Construction of a 4 km tram line and 6 stations.
- Supply and installation of 14 trains.
