| Background |
GCC Interconnection AuthorityGCC Interconnection Authority plans to develop the GCC Grid Interconnection Phase I to connect the power networks of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Qatar.
The phase 1 project is divided into five packages covering 13 lots to install back to back stations and to setup transmission lines as well as control centers.
The grid is designed to reduce the need for spinning reserve and to increase security in case of any power shortages in the region.
SNC LavalinSNC Lavalin is the overall project consultant.
The GCC Grid project will be carried out in three phases. Phase 2 will link the UAE with Oman. All GCC states will be linked up in the final phase. |

In April 2009, the electricity connection between Qatar and Saudi Arabia was completed.
In March 2009, 91% of the project was completed.
In August 2008, 83% of the project was completed.
In January 2008, 50% of the project was completed.
In November 2005, the EPC contracts were awarded to ABBABB for the six substations package, Pirelli with Nexans for the submarine link package, Areva T&D for the converter station package & grid control center and NCCNCC with MeedcoMeedco for the overhead lines package. |

| Financing Source |
GCC Grid Interconnection Project Phase I is funded through 65% debt 35 % equity by the governments of Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Qatar.
40% of the cost will be funded by Saudi Arabia, 36.5% by Kuwait, 13.5% by Qatar and 10% funded by Bahrain.
