| Background |
The Jordan Red Sea Project Company, with the support of the Jordanian Ministry of Water and IrrigationMinistry of Water and Irrigation , plans to develop the first phase of the Jordan Red Sea Project. The desalinated water produced will be used to serve Aqaba and development projects in the area. The project consists of the extraction of 400 million cu.m/y of sea water from the Red Sea and its transportation through a pipeline to the two desalination plants in Aqaba and in the Dead Sea region. The desalination plant will have a total capacity of 200 million cu.m./y. The Aqaba desalination plant will produce 50 million cu.m./y of desalinated water. The remaining capacity (150 million cu.m./y) will be built near the Dead Sea (exact location to be determined). Excess sea water and desalination brine will be discharged into the Dead Sea. This project consists of the first phase of the five-phased Jordan Red Sea project. The other phases will be developed gradually depending on the re-assessment of water demand. The master project is expected to generate 900 million cu.m./y of desalinated water and will be completed within 30 years. |
