Background The Ministry of Electricity & WaterMinistry of Electricity & WaterLoading... (MEW) plans to construct Al Zour North power and desalination plant, next to the existing Al-Zour South power station, about 100 kilometres southeast of Kuwait City.

Phase 1 will produce of 1,500 MW of power and 102 million g/d of desalinated water.

The plant will be built in four phases. Phase 2 will consist of another 1,500 MW. The third and fourth phases will add 800 MW and 900 MW to the plant respectively. In total, the plant will have a capacity of 4,800 MW and 280 million g/d of water.

The plant was initially planned to be a steam power plant.

Latest Events In June 2010, the project was canceled. Al Zour IWPP project will replace Al Zour North power project.

4 July 2010 was the bids submission deadline for the EPC contract for the first phase of Al Zour North power plant (deadline extended from 30 May 2010).

In April 2013, the plant was initially expected to start commercial operation. The project's completion was previously expected in April 2012.
Previous Events On 1 March 2010, the ITB for the EPC contract for phase 1 of Al Zour North power plant was issued (previously expected in February 2010).

At the end of June 2009, a new tender was expected to be issued for phases 1 and 2 of Al Zour North plant but the project was delayed to Q1 2010. The ITB issuance was previously delayed twice from February 2009 to April 2009.

In August 2006, the consortium of Washington Group InternationalWashington Group InternationalLoading..., Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Company and Consolidated Contractors International CompanyConsolidated Contractors International CompanyLoading... (CCC) was the sole bidder for the EPC contract.The six other prequalified groups have declined to bid due to unknown reasons. The tender was canceled.

In January 2006, the ITB was issued.
