Work visas for foreign construction workers rose 33% in 2012

The construction sector secured 58 percent of the total number of work visas issued by the Ministry of Labor last year, according to the ministry.

Last year, the Ministry of Labor issued nearly 1.6 million work visas, of which 900,000 were allocated to the building and construction sector.

The issuance rate of work visas increased by 33 percent in 2012 compared to figures for 2011. The source attributed this increase to the increased activity in the area of construction projects in the Kingdom.

During 2012, an additional 316,140 work visas were issued compared to 2011, marking an increase of 51 percent.

The number of visas for the service sector increased by 23 percent, or 240,670 work visas.

The Labor Office in the Riyadh Province ranked first in terms of the number of visas issued in different provinces last year, where it issued more than 600,000 work visas, he said.

The Eastern Province came in second at 400,000 work visas, followed by the Makkah and Qasim provinces with 150,000 visas each and the Najran Province with 100,000 work visas, according to the source.

He also said that the ministry issued more than 800,000 visas for individuals working in households last year.
