Algeria's El Harrach project set for H2 2014 completion

The Algerian government is expecting the USD 500 million El Harrach project, a development located in the capital Algiers, to be completed during the second half of 2014, an official source told Zawya.

"The government has so far completed around 70% of all project works, which are being implemented by Korean Daewoo and Algerian Public Works Company (COSIDAR), since construction began in June 2012," said Nassib Hussein, minister of water resources.

He added that the El Harrach project will be carried out within the framework of the Blue Plan, a USD 2 billion urban development program intended for the capital Algiers and backed by a decree from Algeria's president Abdelaziz Bouteflika. The entire program includes a series of development projects that extend until the year 2019.

El Harrach comprises works aimed at clearing the areas surrounding a valley, which overlooks five major municipalities within the capital city, in order to protect the development project from flooding hazards.

The project also seeks to transform these areas into tourist destinations and foreign investment centers. El Harrach is being developed within an area spanning 18 kilometers - commencing at the heart of Algiers city center and ending at the southern-most tip of Algeria state.
