Management of projects big and small boosted by both the MoHESR Undersecretary and the Head of KHDA at launch of BUiD's PhD

22 April 2012
BUiD's accredited PhD in Project Management was officially launched on the morning of the first  day at GETEX 2012 at BUiD's exhibition stand by Dr. Saeed Al Hassani, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research deputizing for His Highness Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This programme is the first of its kind in the region whereby  management students engage in an advanced research program appropriate to the demands of leadership and senior management across diverse sectors of the economy. This program is accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research  (MoHESR) and has been developed by BUiD  with academic support from the high-ranking University of Manchester , one of several valued associations with British universities which facilitate equivalency recognition of BUiD awards by the key UK agency NARIC.

Dr. Hassaini was welcomed at the impressive BUiD display by Prof. Abdullah Al Shamsi, BUiD's Vice Chancellor, and a number of academics, staff and students from the University as well as colleagues from Dubai's pivotal higher education community. H.E. Dr. Abdulla Al Karam, Chairman and  Director General of Dubai's knowledge & Human Development Authority (KHDA) added his personal endorsement for the program.  Prof. Alshamsi expressed gratitude to both the Undersecretary and the Director General for their continued support and added, "This program provides a valuable academic contribution to the strategic plans and aspirations of Dubai and the UAE by developing a cadre of professionals and leaders capable of carrying the mantle of economic development and prosperity in and for the city and the nation.  Doctoral research will greatly enhance the capacity of the higher echelons of the labor market to respond to the managerial, scientific and policy challenges of the coming decades."

The same evening BUiD held a seminar in connection with the introduction of the new course at which Dr Abdulla Al Karam was the Chief Guest.  Dr. Karam congratulated BUiD on its achievement and said. "The university has an excellent reputation for supporting research-based study, and this latest degree will allow candidates to undertake critical research in a variety of sectors. This degree will encourage many professionals to pursue doctorate degrees and promote research culture in Dubai."

Dr Paul Gardiner, Head of the Project Management Program at BUiD said, " To compete effectively in the future, organizations will depend on their ability to recruit top talent with the skills to lead, manage, organise and deliver change consistently and cost-effectively in an unpredictable economic environment. BUiD's PhD will address a knowledge gap in the region by contributing to this goal and to the continued growth and development of the UAE."

The programme will give students an in-depth PM knowledge with ground-breaking insights that will help develop a new generation of movers and shakers for higher-level management positions and academia. Dr Gardiner anticipates strong demand for the PhD including from BUiD's own graduates of the Masters in Project Management program, offered in association with the University of Manchester. To date BUiD has 125 PM alumni and a further 110 registered PM students at various stages of progression and BUiD plans to select only 15 doctoral students for its first cohort of PhD Project Management program. BUiD's Project Management Alumnus Abdul Ghaffar Chaudhry who is a Chief Engineer in the Strategic Planning Department  for Strategy & Corporate Governance at RTA shared his experiences on career paths for postgraduates in Project Management. The event was well attended by prospective students asking questions and gathering details about applying  for the September 2012 intake.

BUiD also plans to rapidly extend its PhD offer in the research areas of Engineering, Design, Business and Informatics after securing proper federal approval and invaluable guidance from the MoHESR's Commission for Academic Accreditation, which accredited BUiD's successful first Doctorate in Education (EdD) three years ago.
