Jordan chosen to head EBRD Board of Governors

14 May 2017
Amman - The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) Board of Governors has chosen Jordan as its chair for 2017-2018, and South Korea and Serbia as vice chair.

The selection of Jordan was made during the Board of Governors' 26th annual meeting, which was held in Cyprus on Wednesday and Thursday with the participation of Jordan’s governor to the EBRD, Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Imad Fakhoury.

Fakhoury said in a statement on Saturday that members of the board of governors had unanimously chosen Jordan as the venue for the next annual meeting of the EBRD board and business forum, which will convene at the Dead Sea on May 8-10, 2018, with the participation of 70 nations.

He said Jordan will be the first country in the region to host the meeting, a move that was in recognition of the Kingdom's distinguished developmental efforts and political and economic reforms as well as the EBRD's expanding of its operations in Jordan.

Fakhoury also said the Cyprus meeting had allocated 50 million euros as additional grants to countries hosting Syrian refugees, adding that the EBRD had, with Jordan's support, decided to open a trust fund for investment in Palestine.

He said the EBRD regional office in Jordan will manage investment activities the bank will finance in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, and in Lebanon at a later stage.
