Just two days into the new year, the Dubai government announced plans for a new waterfront development which will include the largest marina in the Middle East and a 135 metre-high lighthouse.

Dubai Harbour, set to be developed by Meraas Holding, will be on the coastal area between Jumeirah Beach Residence and Palm Jumeirah, according to a statement released by Dubai Government Media Office on Monday.

Spread over 20 million square feet, the harbour will include a 1400-berth marina, billed as the largest in the Middle East and North Africa region, which will increase the emirate’s yacht capacity by around 50 percent, the statement added.

It will also include a cruise ship port and terminal which can accommodate around 6,000 passengers, a shopping mall, an events arena, residential buildings, hotels and retail and office space.

But the focal point will be the Dubai Lighthouse, which will include a luxury hotel, an observation deck and an external façade which will be used as a screen for high resolution projections and light shows.

“I am confident that the project will have a highly positive impact on our entire region’s tourism sector,” Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, was quoted as saying.

“We are keen to encourage new projects and promote investments that will contribute to bringing to the region more tourists interested in experiencing this part of the world.”

The masterplan for Dubai Harbour, which will integrate Skydive Dubai and Dubai International Marine Club, will take four years to complete.

Transport plans for the new community include new water stations, three helipads and roads designed to host motor racing events. The government is also conducting a feasibility study for allowing private jets to use the landing strip at Skydive Dubai.

A monorail system will link Dubai Harbour to the Dubai Metro network, while a pedestrian bridge with a jogging and cycling track will also connect the development to Palm Jumeirah.
