Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is in talks with German firm Siemens for another project, with an official announcement likely in the next quarter, the company’s chairman told reporters at a press conference in Dubai.
Siemens has been a strategic partner to DEWA for over 30 years and has worked on a number of large-scale projects in the emirate. Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of DEWA earlier this month met with Dietmar Siersdorfer, chief executive officer of Siemens Middle East, to discuss “important current and future projects and initiatives”, according to a press statement on the DEWA website.
“We own 50 percent and they own 50 percent of this company,” he added, without giving any further details. Earlier he said Siemens was “a very reliable company and they are able to produce and give us the latest technology.”
DEWA announced in December 2016 it has completed 53 percent of the M-Station expansion project, the newest and largest power production and water desalination plant in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
Launched in 2013 at an initial cost of 10.15 billion dirhams ($2.7 billion), the estimated cost of the expansion at the M-Station project is 1.47 billion dirhams, with work due to be completed in by end of April 2018, according to a press statement issued by the Government of Dubai Media Office in December last year.
Siemens was a partner in the project, supplying six gas turbines, six heat recovery steam turbine generators and three back-pressure steam turbines, worth around 6.2 billion dirhams.
DEWA is set to inaugurate two gas turbine generators on 31 May 2017 at M-Station, which will be followed by the addition of two heat recovery steam turbine generators and one back-pressure steam turbine on 30 April 2018. This will increase the plant’s thermal efficiency from 82.4 percent to 85.8 percent, which is considered one of the highest thermal-efficiency rates in the world, according to the press statement in December.
