Dubai

Indian schools in the UAE have mostly reported high scores in the CBSE Class 12 results, announced on Sunday.

A number of schools noted a 100 per cent pass rate, with typically one-fifth or one-third of students scoring above 90 per cent.

CBSE (Central Board of Secondary Education) is India’s biggest school board and over a million students sat its exams in India and elsewhere this year. In the UAE, more than 2,000 pupils appeared for the CBSE exams this year.

Meghna Savit from Indian High School (IHS) in Dubai scored 98.4 per cent in Science stream, reportedly the highest in the UAE. Savit, 17, said she had expected to do well, but was “surprised to learn this is highest score in the UAE”.

“There’s no secret to success in studies. You should understand the concepts rather than just memorise things,” she added. Savit said she plans to enrol in ‘premier’ tech institutes in India; she is awaiting her entrance exam results.

All the other 521 IHS students passed the exams. The figure is the highest number of candidates represented by a single school in Dubai, IHS said. “99.8 per cent of our students have been placed in the First Division,” the school said in a statement, adding almost a third of students scored 90 per cent and above.

Dr Ashok Kumar, CEO of IHS Dubai, said: “Truly humbled by the CBSE Grade 12 results! Yet again our students have done us proud. It is a great achievement and truly speaks volumes about the consistent hard work and dedication of our students and teachers. I hope all our students shine bright wherever they go!”

Meanwhile, Smeet Prakashkumar Shah from Our Own English High School Sharjah-Boys Branch, scored 98.2 per cent in Commerce stream — the highest score in the GEMS school group and one of the highest in the UAE.

Shah, 17, said: “The exams went well, thanks to our teachers’ dedication and support.”

Shah is in India for his college admissions. He said he will pursue a degree in financial markets. “There’s no secret in doing well in studies; you have to love what you do.”

Srivalsan Murugan, principal and CEO of Our Own English High School Sharjah-Boys Branch, said: “We are extremely delighted that our boys did well and congratulations to the entire community of teachers and parents who made this possible… The fact that 29 per cent of our students scored more than 90 per cent also is worth celebrating.”

GEMS CBSE schools recorded a 99.9 per cent pass rate in the board exams. Of the 1,515 students who appeared for the exam, 295 scored above 90 per cent.

At Delhi Private School (DPS) Sharjah, out of the 359 students who took the exams, the school saw 100 per cent scoring first division marks. Greeshma Kurup from the Science stream topped the school with 97.4 per cent.

Vandana Marwaha, principal and director of DPS Sharjah, said students who had received conditional admission in Ivy League universities have now received their confirmation, “thus securing places in their dream institutions”. Almost a third of the school students scored 90 per cent or higher.

At Sharjah Indian School (SIS), out of the 290 students who appeared for the exams, 22 students scored more than 90 per cent and 126 students scored more than 75 per cent.

Pramod Mahajan, principal of SIS, said the “it has to be noted that [SIS] is a community school that admits anyone and everyone on a first-come, first-serve basis, irrespective of their marks, rankings and socio-economic status. But when they complete their schooling, they come out with flying laurels both in scholastic and co-scholastic activities”.
