SHARJAH, 28th March, 2017 (WAM) -- As part of nation-wide initiatives to establish the pillars of an innovation-based economy, the Sharjah Economic Development Department, SEDD, has launched the 2nd Sharjah Design and Innovation Award.

A workshop has been organised at the University of Sharjah to brief students with the terms and conditions of the award which mainly aims to hone students' innovative skills and adopt best scientific standards to instil a culture for innovation and creativity in line with UAE Government's strategy to establish a knowledge-based economy.

Sultan Abdullah bin Hadda Al Suwaidi, SEDD Chairman, underlined the Sharjah Executive Council's support for the award in line with the wise policy of H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah, to ensure Sharjah continues to be a beacon for dissemination of knowledge and best utilisation of human resources being the most cherished asset in the country's development process.

SEDD Chairman pointed out that supporting the knowledge-based economy and the development of innovation is a main component in the process of licenses development. This fact made the department adhere to connect students innovations and leading ideas with the needs of industry in Sharjah.

Dr. Amr Saleh, the Economic Advisor in SEDD, said that the design of the award was based on a weighted reference to a number of international standards in the international awards in accordance with the conditions of the educational institutions and the capabilities of the students as well as the needs of the industrial community as well as Sharjahs vision.
