Zanzibar To De-Register 36 NITC Ships

Rashid Suleiman Seif, Maritime Transport Minister of Zanzibar, a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania, told Agence France Presse on 13 August that the government has decided to de-flag 36 vessels on its ship registry because it found out that they belonged to the National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC). Mr Seif said the government has decided to deregister the ships, and also to be careful when registering foreign ships. Reuters reported on 12 August that Tanzania said a shipping agent based in Dubai had reflagged 36 Iranian oil tankers with the Tanzanian flag without the countrys knowledge and approval. The US and EU have recently raised concerns that NITC tankers were being re-registered as a way of avoiding tightening sanctions aimed at cutting Iranian oil exports.
