'Abd Allah Al-'Attiyah Accorded Rank Of Prime Minister

The Amir of Qatar Shaikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani has issued an Amiri Decree granting Mr 'Abd Allah al-'Attiyah the rank of Prime Minister. Mr 'Attiyah had served as Minister of Energy and Industry in Qatar from 1992 to January 2011, when he was appointed Head of the Ruler’s court (Amiri Diwan), while remaining Deputy Prime Minster in Qatar (MEES, 24 January 2011). More recently, on 29 December 2011 he was also appointed Chairman of the Administrative Control and Transparency Authority, a new entity which was set up to combat corruption in the government and the public sector. The authority will submit detailed reports to the Amir annually. The appointment of Mr 'Attiyah, is an acknowledgement of his contributions to his country during the past two decades. MEES learns that after his appointment to the new authority Mr 'Attiyah has relinquished his posts in the Amiri Diwan and as Deputy Prime Minister.

The Amir also granted Mr 'Attiyah Qatar’s “Medallion of Independence” in recognition of his role in combating corruption and his efforts to enhance the country’s economy, particularly the oil and gas sectors.
