Libyan Airlines operates scheduled transportation services for passengers and cargo to 24 destinations. The private airline owns 7 aircrafts and carried 885,000 passengers in 2007.

Libyan Airlines was established in 1964 as Kingdom of Libya Airlines, later the name was changed to Libyan Arab Airlines and again to Libyan Airlines in 2006. The airline’s international operations were ceased in 1992, due to UN trade sanctions imposed on Libya for political reasons associated with the Lockerbie bombing. During that period the airline flew domestically only.

When the restrictions were lifted in 1999, the airline started to rebuild its international services. In 2001 Air Jamahiriya was merged into Libyan Airlines.

Libyan Airlines raised its paid capital by 76% in 2007, to LYD176 million (USD136.5 million). The Airline ordered 15 airbus aircraft in December 2007 and plans to have one of the most modern fleets in the Middle East.
