  Business Overview
The Qatar Electricity and Water Company (QEWC) manages the country's power generation and water desalination. QEWC owns and operates electricity generation plants with a total installed capacity of 2,187 megawatts and a total desalination capacity of 217 million gallons per day, as of December 2007.

Following the completion of the first Independent Water and Power Project (IWPP), Ras Laffan IRas Laffan ILoading... project in 2004, QEWC won the bid to own the QAR3.27 billion (USD900 million) Ras Laffan II project. The bid gave QEWC a 55% stake in Ras Laffan II, with 40% equity to two foreign firms. When completed at the end of 2008, Ras Laffan II will have the capacity to produce 1,025 megawatts of power and 60 million gallons of desalinated water.

The publicly listed company announced in March 2008 that it is developing a water desalination plant, the Ras Abu Fontas A1. When completed in mid-2009, the plant will have a production capacity of 45 million gallons per day.

QEWC also announced in March 2008 that it will set up the Ras Qurtas Power Company to develop the Ras Laffan (J) project, at a cost of QAR13.8 billion (USD3.8 billion). Ras Laffan (J) will have a power capacity of 2730 megawatts and will produce around 63 million gallons of water a day, when completed in 2010.
