Ras Al Khaimah International Airport was opened in 1976 and is located 18 kilometers south from the city center. In 2005, the airport handled a total of 126,474 passengers and 9,818 tons of cargo, in comparison to 158,140 passengers in 2006 and 11,979 tons of cargo.

Managed by the Department of Civil Aviation of Ras Al Khaimah, the airport is undergoing a USD16.3 million 4-year expansion and upgrade program of its facilities. The program include the construction of an airport hotel, two new terminals, a VIP lounge, expanded runways and taxi-ways, automated passenger and baggage handling facilities, cargo collection center an aviation academy and airport free zone.
