| Business Overview |
BMW Group?s Middle East representative office was established in 1994, in Dubai to provide support to dealers in 14 Arab countries.
BMW was founded in 1916 as a manufacturer of aircraft engines during World War I, under the name BFW. The company then built its first motorcycle in 1923 and began car manufacturing in 1928. BMW Group acquired Rover Group in 1998, from British Aerospace, which brought the Rover, MINI, Range Rover, and Land Rover brands under BMW ownership. BMW eventually sold off the group but retained the rights to MINI, Triumph and other brands. BMW also acquired the rights to the Rolls-Royce brand name for cars in 1998 and built the Rolls-Royce Phantom in 2003.
BMW Group Middle East?s 2006 total regional sales were 14,332 units, up from 13,753 in 2005. GCC countries accounted for 78% of the 2006 regional sales with 11,250 units, the highest volume ever achieved by BMW in the Gulf. The boost was due to UAE figures of 5,000 units sold. Oman grew by 26%, Qatar by 18 % and Dubai by 12 % from 2005. The highest growth among emerging markets was recorded by Syria at a 94 % increase and Pakistan at 62%, from 2005.
The BMW 5 Series represented 33% of all BMW vehicles sold in the Middle East (4,596 units) with sales growing by 10% compared to 2005. The BMW 7 Series sold 3,738 units, representing a 5% sales increase, and 27% of overall BMW regional sales. The BMW 3 Series reached a 17% volume share at 2,383 units and 6 % growth.
