Etisalat, du keep BlackBerry plans open
- Text size
TRATRA
has clarified that it has not asked the country's telecom operators etisalatetisalat
and dudu
to suspend their alternative plans for BlackBerry customers in the UAE. The plans were to be kept open from the beginning of September, as talks between the UAE authorities and manufactures of BlackBerry still remain inconclusive.
While etisalatetisalat
officials said their BlackBerry customers can start applying for the alternative plans from today, dudu
officials said their customers would be informed during the course of next month as to when they can go to the website and choose their preferred Assurance plan.
"We have not asked telecom operators etisalatetisalat
and dudu
to suspend the alternative service plans. Talks are going on between the UAE officials and the Canadian company RIM which manufactures the BlackBerry phones. But no final solution has emerged yet. So the alternative plans announced by the telecom operators in the country in the wake of the impending ban on some of the services of BlackBerry stands,'' a spokesperson for the TRATRA
told Khaleej Times.
However, customers can actually migrate to the alternative plans from October 11 only when the ban on BlackBerry services comes into effect, if the talks fail, the spokesperson clarified.
When contacted, a spokesman for etisalatetisalat
also clarified that the customers can apply for the alternative plans launched by etisalatetisalat
which will remain open from September 1, as was announced earlier. "We have not been asked by the TRATRA
to wind up the alternative plans, even though all of us know that talks are going on between them and RIM. But we cannot change our plans unless there is a clear direction from the TRATRA
. The alternative plans will be suspended only if the talks between the TRATRA
and RIM are successful,'' the spokesman said.
"Following and in continuation to our earlier announcement on offering Assurance plans in response to the suspension of certain BlackBerry services starting from October 11, 2010, customers would be informed during the course of next month as to when they can go to the website www.dudu
.ae/assurance and choose their preferred Assurance plan,'' a dudu
official said in an emailed response.EtisalatEtisalat
in its alternative plan is offering a free smartphone along with 1,000 local and international SMS and MMS messages and mobile data packages to its existing BlackBerry customers, if the ban comes into effect.
The subscribers have to sign a 12-month contract with etisalatetisalat
to avail this offer. This option will be available to all those who are etisalatetisalat
BlackBerry customers as on July 31, Khalifa Al Shamsi, senior vice-president marketing and Abdulla Hashim, senior vice-president, business solutions had told a news conference here earlier.
Du had launched a 'Rest Assured' campaign earlier telling its customers that "they will only get more with our BlackBerry alternative plans".
