MUSCAT -- Adam Airport was officially dedicated to the nation yesterday at a ceremony marking the successful operation of a first-ever flight to the newly-opened facility in the Dhakhiliyah region.

The inaugural flight, coinciding with the Sultanate's 40th Renaissance Day celebrations, took off from Muscat International AirportMuscat International AirportLoading... and landed safely at the green-field airport yesterday morning.

Oman Airports ManagementOman Airports ManagementLoading... Company SAOC (OAMC), the company responsible for managing and operating Muscat and Salalah international airports and other regional airports, organised the inaugural flight in co-operation with other stakeholders.

Adam Airport has a runway which is 4,000 metres in length and 60 metres wide. Designed and built to 'Code F' standards of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), the runway is capable of accommodating the largest commercial aircraft in the world, the Airbus A380.

The facility also boasts a runway turning pad, apron to accommodate three aircraft and four helicopters, VVIP building, interim Air Traffic Control facilities, Meteorology office, General Equipment Workshop and Aircraft Handling Vehicles. Making up the airport's fire fighting capability is a fleet of four of the latest 6X6 fire fighting vehicles supplied by the Austrian firm, Rosenbauer.

Described as a 'test flight', the event was held under the auspices of Shaikh Said bin Ali al Mas'hali, Under-Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications for Civil Aviation Affairs.

The construction of Adam Airport was split into three phases. The first two phases were executed by local construction firm Strabag OmanStrabag OmanLoading.... Phase 1, which began in March 2007, included civil works entailing the provision of utilities, fencing and road access to the airport site. Phase 2 involved the construction of the runway and installation of aircraft landing instruments. Phase 3, which is expected to be completed by 2012, includes the construction of a Commercial Passenger Terminal Building (PTB).

The consultancy services contract for the new airport was awarded to Gulf Engineering JV with Pryde Schropp McComb Inc.

The staff at Adam Airport have completed their training to international standards. Conducted by a specialist aviation training firm in the UK, the training included courses in Airfield Operations and Airport Emergency Exercise preparedness.

Adam Airport will initially be used for daylight VVIP flights. The capability to service night VVIP flights will be commissioned by early 2011. The passenger terminal building is expected to be completed in 2012 when it will become a commercial airport.

The terminal building, which will have a capacity to handle 250,000 passengers annually, will be built on an area of 10,840 square metres, a car park for 225 vehicles, six aircraft parking stands, Air Traffic Control Tower which will be 25 metres high, flight catering kitchen, fuel farm, accommodation complex, security facilities, permanent fire station and waste treatment facility.

Under the wise leadership of His Majesty Sultan Qaboos, Oman has witnessed tremendous development and growth in a very short time span, notably in the airports and aviation sector.

Adam airport is located approximately 30 km from the historic town of Adam in the Wilayat of Adam in the Dakhiliyah region.
