MUSCAT: The two-day International Ophthalmology Conference kicked off yesterday in Salalah College of Technology under the auspices of Dr Mohammed bin Saif Al-Hosni, MoH's undersecretary.

Dr Khalid bin Mohammed Al Mashaikhi, Directorate General of Health Services at Dhofar Governorate, said more than 1.4 million children across the world have lost their eyesight in early stages, adding that statistics indicated that one child losses eyesight every one minute and one person losses eyesight every five seconds across the world. The rate of children's eyesight loss in the developed countries is three for every 10,000 while 12 for every 10,000 in the developing countries and 7 for every 10,000 in the Sultanate.

He added that studies pointed out that 75 per cent of the blindness cases could be avoided, indicating that MoH has paid attention to the eye health including the inauguration of the blindness fighting programme in 1982 that was reconstructed in the fourth five-year plan in 1991. Since 1996, eye health was a vital factor in the medical seventh five-year plan (2006-2010). The programme aimed at preventing the health-threatening factors that might result in eyesight loss, as well as, improving the medical services for eye health across the Sultanate medical institutions.

He said the Sultanate managed to eradicate trachoma while the percentage of it was 70-80 per cent in the 1970s then it decreased to 30-40 per cent during 1980s and it is only two per cent now.

The Sultanate also is about to eradicate measles that could influence the eyesight and causing blindness later.

Dr Khalid also added that the Sultanate pays much attention to the lack of vitamin A that badly influence the eyesight so it promoted the vaccination schedule by additional doses. The conference also discusses some eye diseases, such as, short-sightedness, long-sightedness, glaucoma, as well as, the influence of diabetes on the eye and the methods of early diagnosis. The companies and institutions participating in the conference presented some of the modern appliances used in eye diagnosis and surgeries.
