Dubai Clinic Offers Free Bone Scans to Boost Awareness and Detection of Osteoporosis

One in Four Dubai Adults Suffer from Low Bone Density Increasing their Risk of Developing a Fracture, Warn Medical Experts
Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Dubai residents are being invited to attend the Al Biraa Arthritis Clinic during July and August to take advantage of a free bone scanning scheme, being carried out by the clinic to boost awareness and detection of osteoporosis, a debilitating bone disease.
Up to 25 percent of Dubai residents around 40 years old suffer from low bone density, which increases the risk of developing osteoporosis, according to local data from 15,000 people who took part in previous screening events [1].
The findings indicate the high number of people living in the Emirate who are at risk of suffering from a bone fracture as a result of osteoporosis, which globally affects one in three post-menopausal women and one in seven older men [2].
"We hope the free bone density screening scheme will help raise awareness of osteoporosis throughout Dubai, and encourage people to find out if they are at risk of this debilitating disease, which can dramatically reduce their quality of life," said Dr. Ayman Mofti, General Manager of Al Biraa Arthritis & Bone Clinic.
The clinic is offering free bone mass densitometry to anyone who would like to attend, however the doctors are particularly keen to welcome women who have gone through the menopause and older men, who are both at high risk of developing osteoporosis.
"Post-menopausal women are among those at highest risk of developing osteoporosis due to the disease's strong association with reduced levels of estrogen. It is these women in particular, and older men, that we would like to see taking up the offer of a free bone scan. Many of these older men and women will already have osteoporosis, but will be totally unaware of it and the potential risks they face in suffering a severe bone fracture" added Dr. Humeira Badsha, Consultant Rheumatologist at Al Biraa Arthritis & Bone clinic.
Early diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis can dramatically reduce the risk of suffering bone fracture. Treatment involves boosting absorption of calcium by the bones using bisphosphonate drugs, which can be taken orally daily, weekly or monthly, or via an infusion that only needs to be administered once a year, helping to improve medication compliance.
"There are many treatments for osteoporosis that can prevent fractures, however the newest is a once yearly infusion that can improve the quality of life for patients because it means they no longer have to remember to taka a tablet every day or every week," Dr. Badsha explained.
The free bone screening scheme will be taking place at Al Biraa Arthritis & Bone Clinic on Al Wasl Road from July 17 to August 17 between 9.00am and 4.00pm. Everyone is welcome to attend, please call 04-3487035 for an appointment. www.arthritiscenter.ae
