Qatar to ban shampoo with harmful chemical

DOHA: Qatar will soon ban the import of all shampoo containing 1,4 Dioxane, a toxic cancer causing chemical, a senior official of the Ministry of Environment has said.

Dr Mohamed Saif Al Kuwari, head of the Laboratories and Standardisation Department at the Ministry said the ban would be imposed with effect from July 1.

The decision follows a similar ban imposed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE on the import and sale of all dioxane-laced shampoo.

Once the ban comes into effect, all importers of shampoo products will have to produce a certificate from an accredited laboratory in the countries of origin showing that the product does not contain dioxin 1,4.

"We are working in coordination with the Customs General Authority to implement the ban beginning July 1," Al Kuwari was quoted as saying by Al Sharq.

The Saudi Arabian Food and Drug Administration (SFDA) recently banned the use of eight brands of shampoo and ordered them withdrawn from markets in the country, as they contained dioxane.

The banned shampoo were: Corpore Sano Baby Shampoo from Distribution de Productos Naturales, Spain; Black Seed 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner by Be-Tabs Pharmaceuticals (Pty) Ltd, South Africa; Double Rich Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for Greasy Hair, manufactured by LG Household and Health Care Ltd, South Korea; Himalaya Herbs Anti-Dandruff Shampoo for normal hair, sold by Himalaya Drug Company, India; I-Care fortifying 2-in-1 Shampoo and Conditioner produced in Vietnam; Mud Shampoo with Dead Sea Extract for dry and damaged hair, produced by Natural Care, Jordan; Two types of Sehat Cedr Shampoo produced by Shampoo Cedr Sahat Company, Iran.

Studies show that presence of the carcinogenic contaminant 1,4 Dioxane is widely available in shampoos, body washes, lotions and other personal care and household cleaning products using the word "organic" or "natural" on the product label or ingredient list.

1,4-Dioxane can be a trace contaminant in cosmetics, detergents, and shampoos which contain ethoxylated ingredients. Ethoxylation involves using the cancer-causing petrochemical ethylene oxide, which generates 1,4 Dioxane as a by-product. 1,4 Dioxane is not listed with other ingredients on product labels, because it is formed as a 'by-product' of the ethoxylation process and is considered a 'contaminant,' rather than an ingredient.
