Syria's Tourism Investment Increased

DAMASCUS - Syrian Ministry of Tourism estimated that the new underway investments in tourism sector would create by the year 2012 /96/ thousand job opportunities in tourist restaurants and hotels.
In its report about ' tourism investment in Syria', the ministry said that job opportunities in constructions related to tourism investment reached to /35151/ workers, and that the total number by the year /2012/ would be about / 250/ thousand job opportunities.
The report cited the dire need as to train 10 thousand workers annually. The ministry affiliated schools, institutes, and hotel centers have about 1500 students every year.
New 8 buildings and institutes affiliated to the ministry were also constructed, according to the report, declaring that Syria came second at the international level as far as the growth of job opportunities in tourism sector.
The value of tourism investments, witnessed qualitative development between 2005 and 2008, stood at USD 4.3 million, added the report.
The value of tourism investments already in operation is 207 billion Syrian Pounds (SP), under construction investments is 296 billion (SP), stated the report.
Syria received about 6 million tourists in the year 2009, said the report, estimating that those tourists spent about USD 5.2 billion.
74 percent of tourism investments is for Syrian Businessmen, 20 percent Arabs, 6 percent for foreigners, noted the report, expecting tourism infrastructure investments in Syria to redouble during the coming 5 years.
Tourism investments cover different Syrian governorates: Damascus with 56.8 billion (SP) 28.6 percent, Damascus Countryside: 39.6 billion SP, 19.9 percent, Latakia: 27.3 billion SP, followed by Aleppo, Tartous, Homs, and other governorates.
The report asserted that following the international financial crisis, competitiveness in the Arab world is better than in other regions, tourism growth in the Middle East reached to 11 percent in 2008, while it stood at 2 percent internationally.
