Sony Unveils 3D Home Entertainment Products

DUBAI -- SonySony
unveiled its three-dimensional next generation home entertainment products on Wednesday for the Middle East and Africa market and hoped to capture 30 per cent market share in the LCD TV segment in the region. The Japanese electronic giant will roll out its 3D products --Bravia LCD TVs, Blu-ray Disc products, Vaio PCs, digital still cameras and PlayStation3 - all with 3D -- in July this year in the region.
"This region is very important for us and its growing market. Last year our market share in LCD segment was more than 20 per cent and this year 30 per cent is achievable as we see signs of recovery compared to 2009," Osamu Miura, managing director, Sony GulfSony Gulf, told Khaleej Times after unveiling the new products.

is a 100 per cent subsidiary of Sony Corporation and is the regional headquarters for the Middle East and Africa regions. Miura expects the company's annual revenue will reach $1.5 billion by the end of March 2010 in the region. "Even in crisis time we are growing as 2009 revenues are 10 per cent higher than 2008," he added.
He said that the ongoing Dubai Shopping FestivalDubai Shopping Festival
is much better than last year. "It is above our expectations," he said. The huge success of 3-D movies such as Avatar has all electronics makers looking to the technology as a way of kick-starting a new wave of buying.
"Clearly, 3D has already captured the imagination of filmmakers, content creators and broadcasters. SonySony is moving to bring that magic directly into consumers' homes with movies, games, and sporting events, all in 3D, in 2010, Miura said.
In the Middle East, cable television service providers such as E-vision, ORBIT SHOWTIME and broadcasters such as Al Jazeera are upgrading their bouquet to provide the latest in entertainment technology and are in active discussion with companies to bring 3D to Middle Eastern homes in 2010.
"E-Vision has always taken the initiative to launch the latest TV broadcasting technology in the UAE, and undoubtedly the greatest credit for our success is due to our clients who have come to expect the best from us."
The global installed base of PlayStation3 is approximately 30 million units with more than half a million units in the Middle East. SonySony will provide firmware updates making PlayStation3 units compatible with 3D stereoscopic games. And with a separate firmware update, they will also become compatible with 'Blu-ray 3D' discs.
