Oetker Hotel Collection eyes Qatar for growth

10 February 2010
DOHA: The management of the Oetker Hotel Collection, which is part of the $14bn Oetker brand, said they are eyeing Qatar and the rest of the countries in the Middle East for their major expansion.

Frank Marrenbach, chief executive officer of the Oetker Hotel Collection (OHC), said they are planning to open 10 to 15 hotels in the next 10 years and two-thirds of that will be located in the GCC.

"We are already in talks with potential investors and we will be looking at several locations here," said Marrenbach during the OHC Middle East roadshow press conference yesterday.

Marrenbach said they are looking into opening a resort hotel which will offer a relaxing view of the sea. "We want to attract the leisure travellers... and judging from Qatar's vision to enhance its tourism industry... I am sure there is market for that."

According to the OHC CEO, the brand is planning its expansion now as they want to take advantage of the market's low interest rates. "Now is the best time to plan these things as it takes two to three years to open a hotel."

Marrenbach said they are definitely interested in opening a hotel here as Qatar is a growing nation. "When you look at the statistics, Qatar has the largest growth in the GCC, and high growth rate of infrastructure development, among others."

"The cultural development of a country is very important in building hotels... when you build hotels, you do not build just for the sake of building... it won't work... you need to make it a destination that reflects the tradition of the country," he said.

The OHC, which is a family-operated business, operates four of the world's finest luxurious hotels, displaying authentic European élan and settings with genuine period furnishings, comfortable rooms and lavish suites, in France and Germany. The Hotel Collection also boasts of a variety of facilities and services that meet the luxurious needs of both business and leisure travellers. The OHC plans to open its fifth hotel in 2012 in Abu Dhabi.

Once operational, Le Bristol Abu Dhabi will feature 250 luxury guestrooms with a minimum size of 40 square metres and suites with private fitness and amenities. A private beach and a private marina next to the hotel will complete the setting.

"As part of our development plan, we are happy to be in the GCC and Lebanon to officially announce our launch and introduce the OHC to the region. The family-run OHC has long been associated with style, nobility and efficiency and has created a timeless tradition at each of its properties."

Marrenbach was accompanied by Samir Daqqaq, OHC's senior vice president (development) for Middle East and Africa and Dr Timo Gruenert, chief financial officer of OHC.
