Amman -- Their Majesties King Abdullah II and Queen Rania on Sunday attended a ceremony to launch Al Hussein Medical Centre development scheme which will raise the landmark medical facility's capacity to 2,000 beds.
The King and Queen also inaugurated the Queen Rania Al Abdullah Paediatrics Hospital as Jordan's first specialized children's medical facility.
King Abdullah urged cooperation among various concerned authorities to carry out the project and apply best standards to uplift medical service at the centre as a regional medical hub.
Al Hussein Medical Center is the largest and most prestigious multidisciplinary medical institution in Jordan dedicated to providing the utmost in patient care and professional training.
The King had earlier ordered modernization and expansion of the centre's capacity and its provision with up-to-date equipment and skilled manpower in order to carry out its noble mission.
During a visit to the centre last year, King Abdullah announced a campaign whereby to contact friends of the Kingdom and late King Hussein and all concerned institutions and organisations across the world to provide funds for the medical centre's modernisation effort.
The three-phased project, which will be implemented over the next 20 years, involves addition of 1,330 beds to its current capacity of 670 beds.
During the ceremony, King Abdullah, the supreme commander of the armed forces, was briefed on Royal Medical Services' achievements in hospital expansion work nationwide.
The project's launch coincides with the 11th anniversary of the passing of His Majesty the late King Hussein and King Abdullah's accession to the throne.
