DUBAI -- Rashid HospitalRashid HospitalLoading... in Dubai has become the first hospital in the Middle East to secure a disease-specific certification in cardiology from an international accreditation body.

The Joint Commission International (JCI) has granted a disease-specific certification in Acute Coronary Syndrome to the cardiology department in the hospital for the best practices followed in dealing with patients suffering from heart attacks and other cardiac disorders.

The accreditation body has also put up some practices followed by the department on their best medical practices website to encourage other hospitals around the world to follow the same standard.

"The cardiology section is a high-volume, high-risk department and it is a known fact that heart diseases are a leading cause of mortality worldwide and also in the UAE," said CEO of the hospital Dr Shawqi Mirhashem Khoori.

"Given the importance of this section, this certification is a significant achievement and it encourages us to ensure that we continue to provide the best possible treatment for our patients," he said at a press conference held on Wednesday to announce the achievement. The third busiest department in the hospital -- after the trauma centre and the general surgery department -- has also surpassed the international benchmark with regard to the time required before a procedure is conducted.

"From the moment the patient is brought in to the hospital until his artery is unblocked by either an injection or an angioplasty, the time is monitored. Our cardiology department has surpassed the international 'door to needle' time," said head of the department Dr Fahad Omar Baslaib.

"We take 24 minutes as compared to the international requirement of 30 minutes. We have also surpassed the 'door to balloon' time. We take 74 minutes whereas the international standard is less than 90 minutes," he said.

"Heart attack cases are critical and time is muscle for us, which means that the longer the time taken to unblock the artery, the more damage to the muscle, which essentially means more damage (to) the heart," said Baslaib.

He said a patient education tool called the "patient map" which his section had prepared was also lauded by the JCI officials. The 'patient map' is an educational guide that informs the patient about the procedure he has undergone and the next steps he needs to follow including diet, counselling, medication and rehabilitation.
