Under stricter law, more pharmacies shut down for violations

AMMAN - More pharmacies violating the Public Health Law were closed last year compared to 2008, although the total number of violators dropped, according to Jordan Food and Drug Administration (JFDA) figures released on Tuesday.
The administration closed 75 pharmacies out of 304 that violated the law in 2009, compared to 14 out of 400 the preceding year; 63 were closed down in 2007, while data was not available for the total number of violators that year.
Other pharmacies were fined for operating without licensed pharmacists, and selling free samples or smuggled drugs.
JFDA Director General Mohammad Rawashdeh attributed the rise in the number of pharmacies closed last year to the increased number of JFDA inspectors compared to 2008, and to intensified inspection campaigns.
The implementation of the amended Public Health Law also helped fight the illegal trade in pharmaceutical products, he said.
According to the 2008 modifications to the Public Health Law, any pharmacy or shop found selling counterfeit drugs faces a fine ranging between JD5,000 and JD10,000.
The figures released yesterday also indicated that the JFDA closed three drug stores in 2009 and referred their owners to the prosecutor general for dispensing medicines without showing their country of origin and manufacturer.
"Any drug store operating in the Kingdom should provide the administration with a list of drugs they deal with, their country of origin and their manufacturer," Rawashdeh told press yesterday.
He revealed that the administration closed a local pharmaceutical factory last year and halted production at seven other factories due to various violations.
In addition, 851 establishments trading in food were closed in 2009, compared to 1,110 in the year before, Rawashdeh noted.
