Saudi Arabia to construct mega plant |
|
Saudi Arabia is setting up a mega water desalination and power generation plant, for which it has already completed the bidding process, said the kingdom's minister for water and electricity at the IDA World Congress 2009.
The annual capacity of the desalination plant will be one million cubic metres and the power plant will have a generation capacity of 1000MW, said Abdullah Al Hussayen, Saudi Minister of Water and Electricity.
He expressed concerns about the increasing cost of desalinating water, which has gone up by more than 33 per cent recently.
"At the Ras Al Zour Desalination and Power Plant in Saudi Arabia, the lowest tendered price of water was $1.2 [Dh4.4] per cubic metre - the highest ever offered, when compared to $0.90 per cubic metre in a similar plant awarded three years ago. Of course, the global recession has something to do with it, but the trend is definitely not down," he said.
According to the International Desalination and Water Re-use Quarterly, about 14,000 large-scale desalination plants with a total installed capacity of about 10.5 billion gallons per day are in operation worldwide.
"The desalination market is expanding significantly, with estimates approaching 15 per cent per year, but with all of this, the global population that is currently served by desalination is less than one per cent. Desalination remains beyond the affordability of most of the world's population, particularly in the agriculture sector.
"There has been no breakthrough in the cost of desalination. The gradual reduction in cost due to improvement in technology has been mostly offset by increased material and labour cost," said Al Hussayen.
About 97 per cent of water on the earth is saltwater in the oceans. Most of the rest is locked up in the polar ice caps and glaciers. Only a miniscule 0.036 per cent is found in rivers and lakes.
"The solution is reducing per capita consumption in municipal use," he said.
