Region's carriers exempt from any delays in delivery of Airbus A380
- Text size
Possible delays announced by aircraft manufacturer AirbusAirbus
last week to its A380 delivery schedules will not impact Emirates and other carriers in the Middle East."Emirates has 53 AirbusAirbus
A380 aircraft on firm order, with two of these due for delivery in December 2009. Emirates currently has five A380s in its fleet and we will receive a further 15 up till the end of November 2010. We remain in close discussions with AirbusAirbus
in relation to our order," Tim Clark, President of Emirates airline, told Emirates Business."No delays have been announced. And deliveries for 2010 will be announced early next year," added an AirbusAirbus
spokesperson.AirbusAirbus
, a unit of European defence and aerospace group EADS, said last week it might delay delivery of one or two of the 13 superjumbo A380s scheduled for this year until January 2010.Client financing remains difficult and it would take time for the business environment to return to normal, it added.
"Everything will depend on the capacity of airlines to take these planes at the end of the year," AirbusAirbus
' Chief Operating Officer, Fabrice Bregier, was quoted as saying by Reuters.AirbusAirbus
has to date delivered seven of the 13 A380s scheduled for this year."We are still aiming for 13 [A380] aircraft deliveries, but one or two could come in January," Bregier added.
However, according to industry sources, even as AirbusAirbus
said that the target for 2009 is still 13 aircraft, "it remains a challenge".Meanwhile, AirbusAirbus
in September cut its A380 delivery target to 13 from 14 for 2009, and has delivered seven superjumbos as of today.AirbusAirbus
's Chief Executive Officer, Thomas Enders, also said last week, as quoted by Reuters, that it was "too early to relax" over customer financing and to believe it was guaranteed. He added the overall A380 delivery rhythm in the first half of 2010 should be "similar" to the current rate.
AirbusAirbus
' Vice-President ofProgrammes, Tom Williams, said last week the aircraft manufacturer expects to match the 2008 delivery record of 483 aircraft in 2009, but said the A380 superjumbo programme was still challenging. The A380 programme was "not running as smoothly" as AirbusAirbus
would like, he said. The manufacturer has for this year booked 149 gross orders – before any cancellations. And with a target of 300 aircraft orders for this year, AirbusAirbus
has only the fourth quarter left to make up for the rest of the orders. Revision
Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
has sought a revised schedule for the delivery of AirbusAirbus
A380 aircraft in view of the airline's "performance requirements", Doha-based Gulf Times reported yesterday, quoting the airline's Chief Executive Officer, Akbar Al Baker."Qatar AirwaysQatar Airways
will take delivery of the contractually committed aircraft," he said in the report.By Shweta Jain
