Cost-conscious turn to virtual desktop software

A virtual desktop software package that saves money on hardware, software and operational costs is selling like hotcakes at Gitex.
Many cost-conscious companies and businesses are buying the package to reduce their IT spending by smartly sharing office computers.
While setting up a new computer with the latest window software will cost much to an ordinary office, the virtual desktop software allows sharing of one desktop computer by 11 to 15 users and substantial savings every year.
Frank Coggrave, Vice- President and General Manager at NComputing UK, said more than 15 million users around the world were using the virtual desktop software.
"In most offices, only five to 10 per cent of the personal computer capacity is used, and most of the time 80 per cent computer hardware lies idle,'' said Coggrave
"As computers have become faster, bigger and more efficient, a normal desktop PC is like a server several years ago. Our virtual desktop software, NComputing vSpace, taps into 95 per cent of the PC capacity - that is normally wasted - for use by other users."
With the use of the software, one single computer can be shared by 11 users. Only multiple monitors are needed to use the virtualized desktops.
"An average person uses less than five per cent of his PC capacity," said Coggrave. The users save additional investment needed for 10 PCs plus the software, energy and other related costs.
"Each user sharing the PC runs his own applications and has his own files, settings and preferences. There is no need to spend money on dedicated computer for each staff," he said.
Coggrave said the response from Gitex 2009 visitors had been quite substantial as the virtual desktop reduces hardware and support costs by 75 per cent each.
NComputing runs on standard PCs with popular versions of Windows and Linux. The UXP protocol transmits and handles the desktop display and remote activities from the user keyboard and mouse.
The company has already sold more than two million units.
