DOHA: Qatar AirwaysQatar AirwaysLoading...' inaugural flight to the northern Indian state of Punjab landed in the holy city of Amritsar yesterday morning heralding the beginning of huge route expansion over the next seven weeks.

With Diwali, the festival of lights, celebrated by Hindus and Sikhs around the world on October 17, the arrival of flight QR298 from Doha was a welcome sign ahead of the festive season.

Before departure from Doha International Airport on Sunday night, a simple ceremony was held to celebrate the inaugural flight with a number of senior officials of the national carrier present. The airport's Gate 2 pulsated with life as a Punjabi dancer entertained passengers with some Bollywood dance items with a number of the passengers swaying to the lively beat as they waited to finally embark on their journey.

"This is only the start of a series of our expansion routes to various destinations. But for now, it is but appropriate to celebrate this inaugural flight to the city of Amritsar, which is set to offer additional opportunity for more people to enjoy experiencing India's beauty with its diverse languages, culture and beautiful places," said Fathi Al Shehab, Qatar AirwaysQatar AirwaysLoading... "Qatar AirwaysQatar AirwaysLoading... and, indeed the State of Qatar, have close ties with India which are today strengthening with the launch of flights to Amritsar.
