AMMAN (Petra) - HRH Princess Basma on Tuesday highlighted the competitiveness of the Jordanian health sector and its distinguished and qualified doctors.
Speaking at the opening of the Pan Arab Conference on Thoracic, Cardiac and Vascular Surgery yesterday, the Princess said, "Convening such scientific conferences in Jordan is evidence of its achievements at all levels" in its endeavour to serve citizens.
Arab and foreign specialists from public and private institutions participating in the conference are scheduled to examine the latest developments in the areas of thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery at the international level.
According to Jordanian Association of Thoracic and Cardio-Vascular Surgeons (JATCVS) President Abdullah Qudah, participants will examine 70 papers on heart surgery, catheterisation, lung and heart transplant, angioplasty and the pre-diagnosis of lung cancer.
In her opening address, Princess Basma commemorated His Majesty the late King Hussein's contribution to the medical field, noting he had a great impact on this arena "through dispatching Jordanian doctors to the best universities and scientific institutions".
His Majesty King Abdullah followed on these footsteps, the Princess said, highlighting his commitment to the continued development of this sector.
"Despite the great developments that the thoracic, cardiac and vascular surgery has seen in the past few years, one cannot ignore the role of prevention of heart diseases, especially through combating smoking, adopting appropriate health practices and following sound eating habits," the Princess said in her address.
A total of 40 per cent of deaths in Jordan are caused by cardio-vascular diseases, Health Minister Nayef Fayez said in his address, noting that this calls for reviewing the national heath strategy and focusing on prevention.
To contribute to fighting cardiac diseases, a cardiac surgery unit will be opened at the Prince Hamzah Hospital within the next few days, Fayez added.
On the sidelines of the conference, Princess Basma inaugurated a medical exhibition, where several medicines, medical equipment and products of local, regional and international companies are on display.
and Jordanian Medical Association will conclude on Thursday. © Jordan Times 2009
